Last weekend I had the joy of beginning my Christmas shopping. As a single man I usually put this chore off for as long as possible. Unfortunately this year I cannot escape the need to shop early and often for gifts.
Finding myself at the Trafford Centre on a Sunday in Advent was a shocking experience, the crowds had gathered an hour before it was possible to buy anything. There was a distinctive air of a consumer feeding frenzy about to erupt at mid-day. Looking for an oasis of calm and peace I ventured to John Lewis, an ocean of good taste in the puddle of Mall Hell.
Instantly I was transformed from stressed shopper to happy customer as assistants went way beyond what was needed to help me find gifts for friends and colleagues. As a result I spent well and often and soon had several bagfuls of gifts. As a single man I rarely wrap and friends get presents in an assortment of gift bags and lame excuses. This year is different! John Lewis gift wrap for only £3.00 regardless of size.
Every gift goes into a box, gets properly packed and then wrapped in quality paper with a ribbon and gift card. All this while you wait in comfy chairs with serene music. Guess where I am getting the rest of my Christmas presents?
Driving back to Lancaster with my beautifully wrapped presents I got to thinking about what we can learn from this experience at Customer Street. We already try and exceed our customers expectations with our directory products that deliver results in the search engines and get our customers found for the services they offer. We already have excellent Customer Support staff who will do all that they can to resolve a customers issue. We send our customers statements to prove how well their listings get found on ufindus.com, smilelocal.com, moreuk.com and the Customer Street trades sites. We offer an 0845 free of charge with our packages, free domains and e-mail services.
So what more could we do? I realised that John Lewis can’t make any money on the actual wrapping, the overheads, materials and labour required would outstrip the meagre £3.00 charge. John Lewis can only do this to add value to already excellent products and services. This made me smile a lot. Customer Street already offers an excellent product that works. I realised that we already gift wrap our directory services with lots of extras and a great customer experience.
